My Last Monday

I seem to be waxing poetic this morning...

It’s my last Monday,
One week to go.
I’ve been here twenty years,
The last fifteen in the same position,
The same office,
The same desk.

This was my choice,
I decided to retire.
Wanted to write full time.
But…fifteen years.

I have to take down all my pictures,
Plaques and certificates.
And on the bulletin board,
Notes and jokes and bits of memories.
Gathering my books
And the things on my desk.
My Red Sox baseballs,
Desk toys, clock,
Nameplate.
Fifteen years.

Packing it all to take home
Though there’s really no place for it there.

This will be a busy week.
Still lots to do
Getting things ready
For the person who will have
This position,
This office,
This desk,
Next Monday.

Ever left a job you'd been in for a long time?  What was it like?

Countdown to retirement and writing full time: 5 work days to go.

I'm currently enjoying: The Mummy Case by Elizabeth Peters

Groaner of the Day: (This one was told to me yesterday by my nine year old granddaughter....)  Why did the pony go to the doctor?  Because he was a little hoarse.

I was the art director for a large communications company and it was the position I had held longest in my career. (a real milestone for my gypsy self)

It really surprised me that I missed having some place to go every morning. It took six months before I stopped getting up at 4:30.

PS I retired more than a year ago and my stuff is still in a box.

I hope your week is a good one. I had no idea my child knew that joke. That is hilarious.

Hey Maria - Is it considered bad blogging form to delete a post after you've got comments on it? The whole waxing poetic thing seemed fine when I posted it half asleep at 1:30 this morning but now...what was I thinking?

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't miss getting up at 4:30. But I won't be a bit surprised if the stuff I bring home stays in the box forever. Except my Red Sox stuff.

Kim - She had a bunch of jokes and riddles in her purse that she'd clipped from her Highlights magazine. Kept us entertained all the way there.

I guess in polite company it might be, but it's your post.

I should warn you though, that anyone who reads it on RSS or Google Reader will always see it even if they can't access it.

PS You're entitled to wax poetic on upcoming retirement. I'm pretty sure it's a requirement, actually.

Maria - Waxing poetic, maybe. Doing it badly...not so much. But I'll leave it up there. It will be a reminder to me not to post when I'm half asleep.

Oh I didn't think it was done badly, I really liked it! I love rhythmic poetry that doesn't necessarily fit into any specific form but that flows well and carries a lot of emotion. All the poems I've seen/heard you do have had all those characteristics and I've liked them all.

The longest job I ever held was 13 years and what I did miss was the people.

I like your poetry.

I think your grand-daughter is a groaner in the making.

Mary Beth - Thanks. I'm afraid it wasn't my best effort but I appreciate the kind words.

Dru - Thirteen years is a long time. I can see why you'd miss the people. What will make it easier for me is most of the people I worked with a long time have already moved on. Not that I don't like the people there now but I don't have the history with them.

And thank you.

(I loved that my granddaughter came up with a groaner for me.)

Wax away, you've earned it. Congrats on the retirement!

Red Sox stuff needs to be displayed prominently on your full-time writing desk. Ha--you think you retired, but it's only just begun. :)

Good luck on your last week. I can't image leaving a job after 20 years. I've been with my current company for 26. Love the groaner.

Heather - Fear not, my Red Sox stuff will not stay in the box. I've even decided to wear a Sox shirt on my last day just to go out in style.

(You'd appreciate all the Red Sox ornaments on our Christmas tree.)

Mason - Thanks. And wow. 26 years. Not many people hit the quarter century in their jobs anymore. I hope you've been there that long because you love it.

I did miss when I left DQ, was only like 8 years. But lots of memories.
